Candle Cottage is a modern oak framed dwelling located on the fringe of the historic village of Ulcombe Kent. The property was built in the late 1990s to replicate a traditional oak framed house, using vernacular materials. The property was one of 3 built by Cox Restorations
The client instructed Sutton Architects to design a large kitchen and ground floor and an additional master bedroom at first floor. The plan form to create the required circulation included the relocation of the staircase to allow a central access point at first floor along with knocking through the existing oak frame to provide the corridor link. At ground floor level, the original study was changed into a bedroom with en-suite, and also allowed the existing dining area to be enlarged where the original staircase was located. The kitchen also incorporated a spiral wine cellar by Spiral Cellars as part of the construction process.
Access from the kitchen lead to a sunken patio area which was set in a mature garden environment.
The external materials used in the build reflected the original host dwelling finishes.
The contract value was cira £150k.
Contractor for the extension - Cox Restorations.
